One of Mike Scott's early morning jogging routes takes him past the south end of beautiful Five Island Lake. The Shelter House's outside emergency phone was 'out of order' about 80% of the time due to misuse or abuse. "When you're in the phone business for 26 years, you tend to pay attention to those things", Mike Scott said.
He approached Emmetsburg's Parks and Street Superintendant, Bill Dickey, and suggested the phone be replaced with a more reliable device. He told Bill STT and its employees would be glad to help the city by providing all financial and technical expertise to complete the community project. The Park Board welcomed the suggestion and gave STT the approval to find a solution to correct the chronic outage. The 100% weatherproof speaker phone is made from hardened steel and eliminates the need for a handset and coil cord which seemed to be the favorite prey of the mischievous pranksters. Per the Park Board's request - the phone is set up to allow local calls and 911 emergency calls.
"Let's hope the only thing its used for is youngsters calling their parents for a ride home from the beach, but if there's ever an emergency and it can save one life - that's what it's all about", Mike said. |
